Hans de Wit, director at TEC, says of the acquisition: ‘Witteveen+Bos, together with Royal HaskoningDHV, operates in this market under the name TEC. TEC is a world leader in immersed tunnels and a globally recognized name in tunnel engineering. Maidl Tunnelconsultants enjoys a similar level of recognition in the field of bored tunnels. Therefore, this acquisition perfectly complements each other's expertise. With the addition of MTC, opportunities in the international tunnel market are expanded. It enables us to provide comprehensive advice to our clients on all types of tunnels: whether it be immersed tunnels, bored tunnels, or cut-and-cover tunnels. The expertise of MTC will further strengthen TEC's market share.’
Maidl Tunnelconsultants is globally known worldwide as a high-quality firm for bored tunnels, and its founders are considered pioneers of mechanized tunnel construction. The name Maidl Tunnelconsultants will therefore be retained. Jeroen de Leeuw MSc and Ulrich Maidl PhD will oversee this new unit. In the interest of collaboration, capacity will be exchanged, employee deployment optimised, and technical knowledge strengthened. Ulrich Maidl explains: ‘The chance now exists to exploit opportunities presented by digitalisation as well as, for example, 3D FEM calculations, which accurately predict the strength, stiffness and durability of structures. Further developing our real-time data management system, PROCON, also has a prominent place on our joint agenda.’
Jeroen de Leeuw, director at MTC and bored tunnel specialist at Witteveen+Bos: ‘Our collaboration dates back to the construction of the Betuweroute and the North/South Line, two of the most complex and prestigious infrastructure projects in the Netherlands. In recent years, we have frequently worked together on projects, such as a study on a bored tunnel in connection with the landing of energy from wind farms. With the addition of high-end expertise on bored tunnels, we now have demonstrable experience with all possible techniques for constructing any kind of tunnel. After all, clients often do not know whether an immersed or a bored tunnel would be most suitable for their project. The expertise, diverse portfolio, and network that TEC and MTC now jointly possess in this specific international market will be an important factor for ensuring stable returns in the coming years.’
